The origins of Lviv Medical University trace back to 1661, when King Jan Casimir elevated the Lviv Jesuit College to the status of a university with four faculties. However, a fully functional medical faculty was never established before the university closed in 1773. On November 16, 1784, Emperor Joseph II reestablished the university in Lviv, this time including a medical faculty alongside theology, law, and philosophy. This date marks the official beginning of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University’s history. 

Between 1891 and 1898, new educational buildings and clinical facilities were constructed, including departments for anatomy, physiology, pathology, chemistry, obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, and otolaryngology. In March 1900, the first class of 16 doctors graduated, including two Ukrainians, I. Polokhaylo and Ya. Hrushkevych. A century later, in June 2001, the university awarded diplomas to 775 graduates in medicine, pharmacy, and nursing.

In the early 20th century, Lviv’s medical faculty attracted renowned professors from leading European universities in Krakow, Vienna, Heidelberg, and others. Notable scientists such as H. Kady, V. Shymonovych, A. Bek, and J. Parnas headed its departments. From 1920 to 1925, the Ukrainian Secret University operated in Lviv due to restrictions on Ukrainian education under Polish rule. Its medical faculty, with 10 departments and 185 students, lacked proper facilities, forcing many students to complete their studies abroad in Prague or Vienna. 

In 1939, after Western Ukraine became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the medical faculty was separated from Lviv University and reorganized into the Lviv State Medical Institute, with faculties for medicine and pharmacy. During World War II, the institute’s activities were halted under German occupation. Tragically, 13 of its professors were executed by the Nazis in 1941 as part of their campaign to eliminate Polish intellectuals.

In 1942, the German administration established medical courses at the institute, which later became the State Medical Preventive Professional Courses, thanks to the efforts of Professors M. Panchyshyn and R. Osinchuk. After Lviv’s liberation in 1944, the institute resumed its academic activities. Since 1961, the university has trained international students from Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, producing over 2,000 doctors and pharmacists. English-language programs for foreign students began in 1997 and have grown significantly.

In 1996, the institute was granted university status and renamed Lviv State Medical University. Two years later, it was named after Danylo Halytsky, the first king of the Galicia-Volyn State, who promoted education, culture, and medicine.
