Guangdong Medical University (GDMU) has a glorious and storied history that begins from the day it was founded in 1958 as the Zhanjiang Branch of Sun Yat-Sen Medical College. It was upgraded to be a five-year medical college named Zhanjiang Medical College in 1964. Afterwards, in 1992, it was officially named Guangdong Medical College, and in 2016, it further transformed to achieve university status to become Guangdong Medical University. Guangdong Medical University was awarded the lofty title of “Outstanding College” in 2005 by China’s National Ministry of Education in the undergraduate teaching evaluation. A milestone was reached in 2013 when it was given the power to award Ph.D. degrees. In addition, in May 2015, its discipline of clinical medicine ranked among the world’s top 1% in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

Guangdong Medical University (GMU), originally a Zhongshan Medical College’s Zhanjiang Branch, came into being in 1958. In 1964, it became a full-fledged five-year medical college, its name being changed to Zhanjiang Medical College. Another radical change happened to the university in 1992 when the college was re-designated as the Guangdong Medical College. Afterward, in 2016, the institution reached university stature and was named as the Guangdong Medical University.

Through the years, GMU has gained numerous awards and milestones. In 1960, it was hailed as a National Advanced Unit of Education and Fronts, an elite award symbolizing its initial dedication to excellence in education. In 1978, two of its research projects in the sciences won awards at the National Science Conference, further cementing its status for research ingenuity. In 1986, GMU was authorized to award master’s degrees, becoming one of the important institutions of postgraduate medical education. 

GMU was designated by Guangdong Province as an important construction university and, in 1991, passed the provincial-level education examination successfully. In 2008, GMU set up its Post-Doctoral Research Station, ushering in a new era in academic and scientific research. 

In 2009, Guangdong Province had GMU listed as a suggested unit for establishing new doctoral programs under the national limited quota, enhancing its high-level academic training capability.
