Guilin Medical University – China Ranking

From its humble starting point in 1935 until it was formally recognized in 2025, Guilin Medical University (GLMU) has expanded a lot over 90 years, experiencing phases of struggle and success. Originally established as the Guangxi Provincial Guilin Advanced Midwifery School at the base of Diecai Mountain, the school was temporarily closed in 1944 in the midst of the Anti-Japanese War but was reopened in 1946. It had to change names a number of times in the 1950s, indicative of its broadening scope of health education. By 1958, it had evolved into Guilin Medical College, accepting college-level students. But the Cultural Revolution in 1966 resulted in a halt in academic activities until classes resumed again in 1970.

Following the restoration of China’s single college entrance examination in 1977, regular student admissions came back to normal. The college reached undergraduate status in 1987 and passed a critical teaching assessment in 1996. It was approved to award master’s degrees in 2006 and was awarded for excellence in teaching undergraduates by the Ministry of Education in 2007. It continued academically to improve over the years, achieving clinical medicine certification in 2012, doctoral project status in 2014, and a postdoctoral research workstation in 2015. By 2021, it became an official doctor-degree-granting institution, and in 2023, it was approved for a postdoctoral research station in clinical medicine.

In 2025, having reached a milestone, the university was formally renamed Guilin Medical University by the Ministry of Education, confirming its place as a comprehensive, research-oriented medical university.
