Hebei North University Faculty of Medicine – Ranking
Historical Background of Hebei North University Faculty of Medicine Hebei North University’s glorious and impressive history dates back to 1894 when it was first established by Governor Li Hongzhang in Tianjin. At that time, it was referred to as Beiyang
Medical School, and it was the first institution established by the government in China to provide Western medical education, which was a major step in modernizing Chinese medicine. With the Revolution of 1911, the profile of Chinese education was being altered. In October 1912, the government of the newly established Republic of China issued orders No.16 and No.25, formally renaming the college Zhili Public Medical College.
During the same year, the college started admitting undergraduate students, continuing to add more breadth to its curriculum and reach. In 1915, merely three years afterward, the college was transferred from Tianjin to Baoding, an indication of the revolutionary transformations occurring in regional administration and planning for education at that time. Nonetheless, the serene development of the college was marred by historical occurrences. With the advent of the Second Sino-Japanese War on July 7, 1937, coinciding with the larger conflict of the Second World War in East Asia, the college had to shut down its operations because of the worsening war situation.
Following almost a decade of closure, the institution reopened in January 1946, reiterating its dedication to the training of future medical practitioners. In April 1949, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the institution was renamed again and became Hebei Medical College. In 1958, the college was relocated once more—this time from Baoding to Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province’s capital city, where it continued to build its academic facilities and infrastructure.
A significant institutional development occurred in 1995 when Hebei Medical College, Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Junior Medical College of Shijiazhuang were consolidated as one comprehensive school under the revised name Hebei Medical University. This consolidation brought greater scope to the university through the integration of modern and traditional medical education. Nonetheless, in 2013, the Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was split and recreated as an independent institution again, so that it could exclusively offer traditional Chinese medical studies.
