Historical Background and Development

Henan University School of Medicine, which is guided by a tradition of excellence a century old, dates back to the Henan Medical Special School, established in 1902. In 1928, this school became part of the then-freshly opened National Fifth Sun Yat-sen University, presently Henan University, the date when the Medical College was formally founded.

In Kaifeng city, which is renowned for being the former capital of eight dynasties in ancient China, the university has been a strong draw for scholars, intellectuals, and physicians over the years. Throughout its history, the Medical College showed tenacity and devotion to its mission. During the Anti- Japanese War, Henan University, and its medical college, were forced to relocate many times to ensure educational functions were maintained. After the war, it re-migrated back to Kaifeng and established a strong presence again as a force in medical education in Central China.

In 1952, under the national restructuring of higher educational institutions, Henan Medical College was split off and became a separate institution, subsequently renamed Henan Medical University in 1984. In 2000, this college merged with Zhengzhou University. Kaifeng Medical College, in the same year, was merged into Henan University again, thus constituting the reinstatement of medical education at the Kaifeng campus.
