About Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University Medical Institute
In 1608, the city’s educational landscape expanded with the establishment of a Jesuit college. Around 1619, a “Greek, Latin, and Slovenian” school was opened within the Lutsk Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The eighteenth century saw the emergence of various schools in Volyn, including a three-grade primary school founded by the Vasylian fathers at the Lutsk Vasylian Monastery, which offered classes in poetics and rhetoric. By the late eighteenth century, educational curricula had expanded to include mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics, law, history, as well as French and German languages.
By 1830–1831, the Volyn governorate had a well-developed school network, comprising approximately 100 parish primary schools and 14 secondary schools. The evolving education system successfully integrated both local and European school traditions. In 1895, a four-form boys’ school was established, followed by an eight-form boys’ specialized school (gymnasium) in 1908. The first Ukrainian four-grade public school was founded in Volodymyr-Volynskyi in 1916, and by 1919–1920, the number of such schools had grown to 367.
