The development of the university clinics serves as a prime example of the expansion of Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg and its associated institutes in the city of Halle. In its early years, the Faculty of Medicine utilized the hospital of the Francke Foundations, established in 1716, for clinical training (Collegium Clinicum Halense), which significantly enriched the medical degree with practical instruction. From 1786 onwards, under the leadership of Johann Friedrich Goldhagen, the vacant hospital in Glaucha was used for medical education, and later, other buildings, including the Reformed Gymnasium in the city, were adapted for educational purposes. In 1839/40, the first dedicated medical-clinical building for the faculty was constructed at Domplatz, designed by Johann Justus Peter. This area had a long history of housing nursing facilities, dating back to the Middle Ages.

Despite several expansions, this building quickly became insufficient for the growing demands of medical education and clinical practice. From 1876 to 1884, a new complex was developed on what is now Magdeburger Strasse (formerly Maillenbreite), on the outskirts of the city center. The architectural oversight of the project was led by Ludwig von Tiedemann and Emil Streichert. The first buildings within this complex, including the surgical clinic and the women’s clinic, began operating in 1878. The Pharmacological Institute was completed in 1900, marking the final phase of the complex’s initial construction. Throughout the 1950s, several of these buildings were expanded, and annexes were added to accommodate the increasing need for space.

At the close of the 19th century, construction began on a psychiatric and neurological clinic on Julius-Kühn-Strasse, which were later regarded as model clinics. These complexes were funded through French reparations payments following World War I.

In the 1970s, the university began developing a new area for the construction of the “Kröllwitz Clinic” (now situated on Ernst-Grube-Strasse), which was originally intended to serve the population of Halle-Neustadt. Construction of the hospital started in 1974, and between 1977 and 1984, various departments were relocated to the new facility. The second ward building, covering around 34,000 square meters, opened in 1981, and in 1979, the university officially took over the hospital.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the University Hospital Halle on Ernst-Grube-Strasse underwent significant expansion. A new extension, built at a cost of 153 million euros, included a central operating room with 20 operating theaters, new intensive care units, a blood bank, outpatient clinics, and additional ward spaces. Additional teaching and research facilities, including lecture halls, seminar rooms, and a library, were also created, alongside extensive renovations to the existing buildings. In the summer of 2005, the State Center for Cell and Gene Therapy commenced its operations. Since January 1, 2006, the University Hospital Halle (Saale) has been operating as a public institution.
